Young Marines Play Supportive Role at Camp Ho Mita Koda

When Camp Ho Mita Koda Manager Julie Hewitt needs some extra hands around the camp, she calls in the Marines…the Young Marines, that is. For more than two years, members of the Greater Lake County Young Marines unit have given hands-on support to Camp Ho Mita Koda in a variety of areas. During camp check-in, they assist with registration, parking, and carrying campers’ bags to their cabins. In the off-season, they have helped maintain the camp grounds by cleaning up trails and organizing the storage garage.

“What these young men and women do for us is true community service,” said Hewitt. “They’re an organized and hard-working team and a real pleasure to have at camp.” Sometimes during camp Open House, the Young Marines conduct a flag ceremony with campers for the raising of the American flag. At the recent Camp Ho Mita Koda Spooktacular, the Young Marines were on hand to help traffic flow, lead teambuilding activities, and clean up the grounds after the children were gone. They also assist with the annual Blue Knights/Mark Laccheo Memorial Run held each fall to raise money for camperships.

The Greater Lake County Young Marines is a non-profit youth education program for boys and girls ages 8 through high school. The program focuses on building character through self-discipline, teamwork and leadership, and promotes a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. The Young Marines is the official youth program of the U.S. Marine Corps and the focal point of the Marine Corps’ Youth Drug Demand Reduction efforts. The Camp Ho Mita Koda staff is grateful for their commitment to making the camp experience a positive one for campers.
