Case Medical Students Visit Camp Ho Mita Koda
On Friday, July 13, 2007, 12 first year medical students from Case School of Medicine visited Camp Ho Mita Koda as part of their student orientation. David Aron, MD, MS, Debbie Felt, PhD, and Marianne Shelter served as preceptors.
Medical students spent the afternoon at camp engaged in a variety of activities:
- Rich Humphreys, Camp Director, provided an overview of the camp, its history, programs, and shared his experiences living with type 1 diabetes for 50 years.
- Julie Hewitt, Camp Manager, gave the students a tour of the camp and students spoke with camp staff members about their insulin pumps.
- Judy Geraci, Dispensary Charge, provided an overview of the dispensary and diabetes care at camp. All students tested their blood sugar and could try glucose tabs.
- Dyhann Rhodes, RN, Nurse Educator at the Diabetes Association of Greater Cleveland, facilitated a question and answer session about diabetes, including an overview on insulin pump therapy.
- The students participated in an activity where the campers and students paired up and answered questions printed on balls.
- All of the students stayed for a cookout and had time to talk with campers.
Camp Ho Mita Koda was pleased to be involved as a community site for Case School of Medicine’s student orientation.
